Government Buildings Under Fire In Baghdad
Suicide bombers and several unidentified gunmen assaulted a government building in Iraq’s capital Baghdad managing to kill at least two people. This isn't the first attack attempted in Baghdad as the Shiite government is having its already weakened authority tested by militants in the state capital as well as in the Anbar province.
Government troops are trying to settle the insurgency that was started in the Anbar province by al-Qaida insurgents both Iraqi and foreign. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan Ibrahim told reporters that Thursday’s attack was committed by at least 6 gunmen. Their target was Iraq’s state owned Company for Transportation. Located in the vicinity of the Company for Transportation are numerous other state offices making the entire Canal Street a target for the terrorists.
Police officers managed to shoot and kill four of the gunmen inside the Transportation building while the other two blew themselves up at the entrance. Mister Maan also added that an employee at the agency and a police officer were killed but the circumstances of their death were not addressed.
Military personnel and armored vehicles sealed off the entire area with one army helicopter being deployed to the scene. While no one claimed the attacks as of yet, it is believed that al-Qaida fighters were behind the attack due to their past record of attacking government buildings in Iraq.
