Governor Robert Bentley refuses to process Syrian refugee relocation to Alabama
On Sunday, November 15th 2015, Governor of Alabama State, Robert Bentley, announced the state's opposition to settle refugees of the Syrian conflict.
A press release released by the Governor's office, in the wake of recent terror attacks in France, quoted Governor Robert as saying,
“After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. As your Governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way."
It further went to say that Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is working hard with FBI, Department of Homeland Security and other federal security agencies to monitor any possible to threats to public safety in the state. Law enforcement presence and patrols have been increased and security has been increased to meet any threats to the public in the state of Alabama. It further went to confirm that "there has been no credible intelligence of any terrorist threats in Alabama" to date in the wake of the atrocious Paris attacks earlier on Friday November 13th 2015.
More than 100 people lost their lives in the multiple terror attacks on Friday evening.
Mobile, Alabama has its only refugee processing centre in the state which is approved by the United State Department. According to the statement quoted above, no Syrian refugees have yet been relocated to Alabama state over the course of the 4-year Syrian civil war and subsequent emergence on ISIS in Syria. However, states neighbouring Alabama have successfully processed a number of refugee applications from Syria.
I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way. We refuse Syrian refugees. https://t.co/HTpflJUiPc
