“Highly Intoxicated” MBL Star Delmon Young Arrested for Hate Crime Related Assault
Detroit Tigers Outfielder Delmon Young was arrested by the police and was charged with assault following a fight early Friday morning just outside of Tigers’ hotel in Manhattan. Police were notified at around 2:40 a.m. when Young allegedly had a brawl with a 32-year old man and pushed him to the ground causing him scratches. Young needed to spend the night in hospital for being “highly intoxicated” before being taken to jail.
The assault counts as a misdemeanor and a heightened hate crime. "Basically, there was an incident at the hotel (and) some anti-Semitic remarks," said Detective Joseph Cavitolo.
Allegedly, Young was standing outside Hilton New York at around 1:30 a.m. Nearby, a group of about 4 Chicago tourists, who are also staying at the hotel, were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke and a Star of David around his neck. When the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young, reportedly, started yelling anti-Semitic epithets.
It was not exactly clear whom Young was yelling at, but he got into a scuffle with the Chicago group, and a 32-year-old man sustained minor scratches to his elbows, according to police.
The Tigers were aware of the situation, but did not give any comment. This would be the second violent incident involving Young.
As a minor leaguer in 2006, Young had been suspended for 50 games and would have been arrested for throwing a bat at an umpire during a misunderstanding over a called third strike.
