Hong Kong Police Removes Student Barricades

Hong Kong police managed to reopen one of the major roads of the city that was occupied for weeks by students who protested Beijing’s intervention in the election process of their home city. Police forces used chainsaws as well as sledge hammers to remove debris and improvised structures raised by students to block the center of Hong Kong and many of its governmental buildings.

The move didn’t remain unchallenged as protesters took over a tunnel with a major four lane boulevard blocking all traffic in the area. Police tried to quickly remove the protesters with the help of pepper spray and batons but retreated when the crowed showed no signs of moving.

Protesters seemed just as determined and accused central government that they don’t take their protest and demands seriously, vowing at the same time to continue their blockade until government officials respond.

Tensions are growing in the area as a local counter movement confronted the students. They seemed displeased with the impossible traffic and the drop in business in the occupied area.

While no one challenged the police while they cleared the vital road in Hong Kong’s occupied center, protesters didn’t seem troubled by the move. As a retaliation they seem to be making a new permanent base near the newly occupied tunnel saying that it seems only fair as police took one of their roads.
