How To Cope With The End Of The World
With the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world this Friday the 21st of December many people might have some problems coping with the pressure put on by various news and websites.
With a reported 6 million Americans believing that the Mayan prophecy is true and the world will end this Friday clinical psychologist Scott Bea says it’s more a problem of “fear of the unknown” that a fear of a possible end of the world.
“Some people really respond with fear to uncertainty-things they can’t predict …There are media reports of cataclysms: tsunamis, things of that nature that get people guessing at the end of the world. Now you add the Mayan calendar thing, which may be misinterpreted by many, and this just fuels the fire for people who are anxious about these sorts of things”
With the news, the internet and other media outlets bombarding us with news about the imminent end of the world the way we cope with the situation depends on the type of person you are.
Bea said “If you’re optimistic about the future, it’s going to be hard to imagine the world ending in just a few days … if you tend to be pessimistic, fearful, have a hard time tolerating uncertainty, than you may be a little more prone to taking action for the possibility that the end of the world is imminent.”
