Huge Turnout Expected In Italian Elections
Italian elections that will be held this Sunday might have the highest turn out in recent years as the fate of Italy and the E.U.’s currency might be decided this weekend.
The campaign was especially tough as Silvio Berlusconi, who is on trial for sex crimes and corruption broke campaign rules and lashed out at magistrates saying they fabricated stories of his “Bunga Bunga” parties to discredit him. He also said that magistrates in Italy are more dangerous than the mafia.
Recent polls show that Pier Luigi Bersani, the center-left leader has a fragile five point lead on the ex PM Silvio Berlusconi, but political analysts say that even if he wins the elections, he will have a very hard time achieving a majority to push in tough but much needed reforms to get Italy out of recession.
The odds are high as whoever wins the election will be tasked with the tough job of moving Italy away from a recession and reigniting an economy that has struggled for well over two decades. The main concerns are that if whoever wins the Italian elections can’t achieve all this, a new debt crisis even graver than the Greek one could rattle markets and possibly spell the end of the Eurozone.
