Idris Elba Talks About His Nelson Mandela Performance

Idris Elba's career couldn't be going any better and with his schedule it’s amazing he can fit all his award winning performances in. He started the year by transforming the Guillermo del Toro summer blockbuster “Pacific Rim” through his powerful performance. He later reprized his Golden Globe winning performance in the BBC detective series “Luther”; a series that has started airing on BBC America as well.

On top of all that he reprized his role as a warrior god on the fictive planet of Asgard in the second part of the blockbuster “Thor: The Dark World”. But perhaps his most challenging yet rewarding role is playing South African leader Nelson Mandela in the biographical drama that is set to debut this Friday.

During a recent interview, the actor talked about the fantastic moment he is going through, career wise but also revealed some details about his personal life. Elba talked about how his father’s passing just nine weeks ago at the age of 76 affected the way he enjoys his success. The actor said that while he is still very much grieving, he “puts on the suit and does the work” as his father would want him to do.

Idris Elba also said that he based his Mandela performance on his father, a Sierra Leone native; who the actor said had a lot of traits in common with the famous South African leader.
