Indy 500 Win For Tony Kanaan

Tony Kanaan came out the winner at the 97th Indy 500 amid caution flags and a close battle among the top three finishers.

The last three laps remained close among Kanaan, Carlos Munoz and Ryan Hunter-Reay. The Brazilian said that he did not want to be leading the pack with the uncertainty of the yellow flags.

Following the caution after Graham Rahal hit the wall on lap number 194, Kanaan made his move. He only needed the partial lap to claim the victory. Munoz came in second while Hunter-Reay was in third place.

Hunter-Reay said that they could have made a challenge in the last three laps. He added that he did not expect the second late caution to come.

The victory of Tony Kanaan at the Indy 500 came after twelve previous attempts and was redemption for him after a number of close calls at the most famous tracks of the sport. In the last nine years, he led the race but was not able to win the championship until today.

Although he wanted to win the race in the past few years, he was resigned to the possibility that he will never come out on top of the Indy 500.

The 68 lead changes broke the record of 34 that was set a year ago. The average speed of 187.43 mph of Tony Kanaan also set a record at the race. Two three-time champions were part of the race, which was a first since 1987. However, Helio Castroneves and Dario Franchitti did not pose a problem to the top three.

Although rain was expected during the race, it did not come. The race was also the third coldest in the history of the Indianapolis 500.

Kanaan, who used a blue convertible for his victory lap, is a well-admired veteran who had a number of kind words from competitors and fans. Tony Kanaan said he proved that not all nice guys finish last at the Indy 500.
