“Into The Woods” Ticket Sales Surpass $1 Million

The initial figures of “Into the Woods” of Disney for its Christmas Eve release in the North American market was impressive as it earned $1.1 million in ticket sales. While the figure surpassed the December 18 opening sales of “Annie,” which earned $360,000 for Sony, but it was a bit lower than the $1.4 million earned by “Big Hero 6.”

The number of theaters the star-studded movie musical of Disney will be shown on Christmas Day will be increased to 2,440. The movie is based on the musical of Stephen Sondheim, which was initially staged in 1986. The movie version of “Into the Woods” is under the direction of Rob Marshall. The star-studded cast is led by Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Christine Baranski, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Daniel Huttlestone.

“Unbroken,” a war drama movie from Universal, opened with $850,000 at 1,979 movie theaters across North America in Christmas Eve. The number of theaters the movie of Angelina Jolie will be shown is expected to increase to 3,131 on Christmas Day.

The controversial movie of Sony, “The Interview,” was shown in over 300 theaters. The movie caused a furor after it led to a hacking attack on Sony. The movie studio also streamed the movie through four digital platforms, which was a first for a major Hollywood film.

The second weekend for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” of MGM gave indications that it may reach between $30 million and $35 million. Christmas Eve ticket sales for the movie reach $6 million in 3,875 movie theaters. The movie already copped $114 million in the US market for the past eight days.

On the other hand, the four-day Christmas weekend of “Into the Woods” is expected to cop between $26 million and $29 million in the domestic market by box office watchers.
