Iraq Blasts and Shooting Kill More Than 70
More than 70 people were killed in Iraq after a series of shootings and bombings on Thursday. Blasts occurred from early morning up to evening that day.
A car bomb exploded near a café in Baghdad’s Zafraniya district and caused the death of 27 people. Most victims were Iraqis that were walking in the street to end the daily fasting for Ramadan.
Before the said incident, a bomb also exploded in an intersection outside a well-known ice cream store in Shi’ite district of Sadr City. As reported by the police and officials in the hospitals, it resulted to death of 16 people and 40 more were wounded.
Amjad Saad, a college student, said, "I was sitting in the cafe when I felt a huge spark like electricity in my eyes, and a huge explosion. After that I woke up in hospital with injuries to my arms and shrapnel in my back."
There was no group who claimed as the one responsible for the bombings on Thursday. On the other hand, the government was investigating the incident and has al Qaeda in their list of possible suspects. The group had made at least one huge assault every month since American troops left in December.
