Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a press release that J.J. Abrams, although he initially denied the position, will be directing the newest addition to Star Wars Series.

This new move will not mean that the director won't continue to give his input in Paramount productions like “Mission Impossible” and a follow up to “Star Trek: Into the Darkness”.

Kathleen Kennedy added “It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

J.J. Abrams also said that taking part in this movie franchise is an honor and that he doesn't quite know when he was more grateful to George Lucas, now or when he directed the first Star Wars.

Beyond directing J.J. Abrams will also be producing the seventh part of Star Wars live action alongside his longtime partner Bryan Burk and Bad Robot Production Company.

Despite his seemingly busy schedule, Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said that J.J. Abrams will be continuing work with them, and will be working on a new Mission Impossible and that he is determined to work on a new Star Trek too.
