Jaycee Dugard’s life after Capture
Jaycee Dugard, the 31-year-old woman who was held captive for 18 years is now adjusting to her new found freedom.
Her memoir, “A Stolen Life”, is set for advance release next week. In this book she detailed her experiences during her 18 years of captivity. Dugard was kidnapped when she was 11 years old in 1991, while walking on the street near her South Lake Tahoe, California home. She was also sexually abused by her captor, Philip Garrido and was only rescued when suspicions on Garrido aroused while he was proselytizing at a northern California University.
Her rescue was made in 2009, along with her two daughters apparently with Garrido as well. Garrido was charged of kidnapping and multiple counts of sexual assault and received a life sentence after pleading guilty of the charges earlier this year. Garrido’s wife Nancy was also charged of kidnapping and rape by force and sentenced to 36 years in prison.
$20 million settlement through a state victim’s compensation fund was received by Dugard’s family because of the state officials’ failure to supervise Garrido after his release from a 10-year prison charge for rape.
Dugard now lives with her family and two daughters, at an interview scheduled to release Sunday, she told ABC News' Diane Sawyer "Now I can walk in the next room and see my mom."
