Jeff Gordon Wins His Fifth Brickyard Title
Jeff Gordon won his fifth NASCAR title after finishing first at the 2014 Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He overtook Kasey Kahne and held on to his second victory at the Sprint Cup this season. It was also the 90th career win of Gordon.
Gordon said he was not good at restarts, but he finally made a good restart when it counted. He added when they got into the first and second turn, he noticed that his Hendrick Motorsports teammate started to loosen. The last time Gordon won at the Brickyard was in 2004. He also won the inaugural NASCAR race in 1994. The win allowed Gordon to tie Michael Schumacher with five victories on this layout.
The victory of Jeff Gordon gave Chevrolet twelve straight victories at the Brickyard. It was also the 225th career win for Hendrick Motorsports in the premier series of NASCAR. Crew chief Alan Gustafson said Gordon was good the entire day and he made it happen.
Kahne said that he allowed Gordon to control the restart. He said he knew Gordon was going to pass him in the first and second turns, but he added that he could have opted for the top line at the restart. He managed a sixth place finish after he ran out of fuel on the last lap.
Kyle Bush, who finished second, said Gordon was fast and it was not easy to catch up with him. Bush was followed by Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano, who finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick said he told Gordon in the morning that it was his day. He added that Jeff Gordon was good on long runs in all tracks and it was a great win for the driver, who was at his home track.
