Jodie Foster stands by Mel Gibson

Hollywood actress and director Jodie Foster said that she is standing by her longtime friend Mel Gibson, inspite of the actor's controversial racist remarks, profanity-laced tirade directed against his wife, and recent troubles with the law.

Foster, who starred in 1994's “Maverick” with Gibson, expressed her support for the beleaguered actor and director, who is being investigated by police for charges of domestic violence and child endangerment.

In the October issue of More magazine, Foster said that Gibson, “is the easiest, nicest person I've ever worked with. The second I met him, I said, 'I will love this man for the rest of my life'”

Foster directed and co-starred with Gibson in the film “The Beaver”, which is yet to released.

Gibson portrays Foster's husband who survived depression by gaining a friend in the form of a hand puppet.

Foster described the 54-year old Gibson as an “undeniably gifted actor and director”, and vowed to stand by her friend.

“When you love a friend, you don't abandon them when they are struggling,” Foster said.

“Of course, Mel is an undeniably gifted actor and director, and 'The Beaver' is one of his most powerful and moving performances. But more importantly, he is and has been a true and loyal friend. I hope I can help him get through this dark moment,” she said.

Another Hollywood star, Whoopi Goldberg, also backed Gibson earlier, saying in the TV show “The View” that she knows that Gibson is not a racist.
