John Kerry Tells NATO To Prepare For Chemical Weapons In Syria
John Kerry gave a statement urging NATO to be prepared for the possibility that Syria is using chemical weapons against the rebels in a civil war that spans more than two years.
The statement comes shortly after an Israeli intelligence official said Bashar Assad, the much contested Syrian president, has been using chemical weapons against rebels for the past month.
The latest statements seem to increase the possibility of a NATO intervention in what seems to be an endless civil war, with both sides struggling to obtain military control of key cities within Syria.
While United States officials have said that the accusation is yet to be confirmed, President Barack Obama warned that if proven to be true, the use of chemical weapons will be “a game changer”.
Russia’s foreign minister said that after both sides in the Syrian civil war have accused each other of using chemical weapons, tests have been politicized and that any decision to intervene by foreign forces should be made after an independent study proves the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
John Kerry was attending the NATO council where he advised that a plan needs to be made in case chemical weapons will be used in Syria. Turkey a key NATO member and a country that borders Syria will be most at risk. Patriot missiles have been deployed to Turkey even before John Kerry’s message.
