John Travolta's Stolen Mercedes Recovered, But in Pieces

Actor John Travolta's vintage convertible 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280-SL which was stolen in Santa Monica, has been recovered, but in pieces.   Two men, who were suspect of the crime, have also been arrested, according to the police report on Wednesday.

Santa Monica police Sergeant Richard Lewis said that two individuals, D.L. Rayford, 52 and Michael Green, 58, who were identified as the suspects relating to the theft, were arrested in December by the police task force investigating a sophisticated car-theft ring.

To avoid compromising a larger car theft investigation, the arrests were not announced to the public earlier, Richard Lewis said.

John Travolta, 58, had reported that he left his convertible Mercedes for only a few minutes on Santa Monica Street last September to have a quick look over a Jaguar dealership and found his vintage car missing when he returned.

After a few months of the search operation which was not disclosed to the public to avoid distraction in the investigation, California police had finally arrested and detained the two people suspected of the crime.

However, the vintage vehicle was found to have been chopped into pieces.   Police said that this might be a syndicate operation of manufacturing and smuggling assembled cars out of different models to create new ones.
