Jordan Spieth Loses Masters Title
Jordan Spieth arrived at the 2nd fairway of Augusta at around 3 PM and started to study the land and plan his next shot. Prior to stepping into the first tee, Spieth made a record of leading the Masters for seven straight rounds, a feat that eluded Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.
For the past two years, he has never let go of the lead even with the pressure he felt during the tournament. On Sunday, he finished the front nine with 32 strokes. He was able to set up his first birdie of the day after sending his second shot into the front green before putting seventy feet close to the lip of a bunker.
On the 4th, Jordan Spieth was able to save a par after avoiding a bamboo thicket nearby. However, he missed a 16-foot put on the fifth after his second shot went close to the grandstand.
But, four straight birdies came after the bogey at the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes. He made a five-yard put on the sixth and sent the ball within three feet on the seventh. The second shot on the eighth got him within eleven yards of the hole before making a 21-foot putt on the ninth.
At the turn, Jordan Spieth was at seven-under-par, which was similar to the second round when he was at eight-under-par. He led Danny Willett by five shots and appeared comfortable going into the back nine on Sunday. However, everything started to go south for Spieth as his second shot on the tenth went into the bunker close to the green. He also missed a four-foot putt, which cost him. He made another mistake in the eleventh as shot went into the trees. While he was able to get within eight feet of the hole, he missed the putt. His lead was reduced to one shot.
By this time, Jordan Spieth was in Amen Corner, which is a legendary part of the course. On the twelfth, the first tee shot of Spieth landed into the bank before bouncing into the water. The same thing happened in 2014 when he played with Bubba Watson. After taking a penalty drop, Spieth mishit the wedge. The ball did not clear the way and sank into the bottom.
He was able to make it across, but landed in a bunker. He was able to make it within three feet before putting for a quadruple bogey. It was the worst performance of Spieth since he became a professional. Prior to this, he never had anything worse than a double bogey.
While he was able to bounce back from a number of bogeys, the play this week was not a good as his performance last year. His drives were not as accurate. While he got a pair of birdies on the thirteenth and fifteenth, he was unable to extricate himself from the mess he got himself into.
Jordan Spieth finished with 70, which was three shots behind the eventual champion, Danny Willett.
