Jordan Spieth Wins Masters In Record-Breaking Fashion
Jordan Spieth won the Masters in Augusta in a record-breaking fashion as he served notice to the golfing world that he is on his way up. Spieth became the second-youngest golfer to claim a victory at Augusta at the age of 21. He is only surpassed by Tiger Woods, who became the youngest man to win the prestigious tournament in 1997.
Spieth also became the fifth golfer to lead the tournament from beginning to the end. He had a four-shot lead when he entered the final round on Sunday. The lead was extended by one following the first nine holes, and he was able to break the 26-birdie record of Phil Mickelson in the last nine holes.
While he wasted the lead in the tournament last year on the last day, this year was different as he was relentless in his drive to win the tournament. The 28th birdie of Jordan Spieth at the 15th hole allowed him to become the first player to get a 19-under par at the Masters, which broke the winning total of Woods in 1997.
While he was unable to match the 12-shot winning margin of Woods, he was four shots ahead of Mickelson and Justin Rose. The halfway total of Spieth at 14 under par also broke the 1976 record of Ray Floyd and his 16-under total was the best in Augusta.
Even as Jordan Spieth broke records during the tournament, Woods was tied for 17th after he closed the tournament with a 73. The former Masters champion remained out of form after around two months of trying to get his game back. Despite his woes, he was able to get an eagle at the 13th hole. The week ended for Woods with a bogey.
On the other hand, the playing partner of Woods, Rory McIlroy, had his best finish at the Masters as he shot a 66 that gave him a fourth place finish.
The top golfer is still looking to win the major title that has eluded him for many years. Rose was only able to get within three shots of Spieth on Sunday as he closed the tournament with a 70. On the other hand, Mickelson had a chance of getting close to Spieth after he got an eagle on the 15th hole. However, he was only able to get pars in the last three holes as he finished with a 69.
Bubba Watson, the defending champion, closed with a 74 as he tied for 38th place. The 2013 green jacket winner Adam Scott also closed at 74 before he handed the green jacket to Jordan Spieth.
