Kim Jong-un Could Face Crimes Against Humanity Charges
Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader has been warned by the international community that he could face trial for crimes against humanity after a United Nations report showed some of the most atrocious human rights violations since World War Two.
This is the harshest warning issued by the international community to the contested Pyongyang regime. It comes on the back of testimonies gathered by retired Australian judge Michael Kirby from victims of the regime. Judge Kirby said that the atrocities committed by the North Korean regime reminded him of Nazi Germany and Cambodia under the Pol Pot regime.
The 374 page report contains shocking testimonials that accuse the North Korean dictatorship of using torture, rape, abductions, murder, enslavement and even starvation and is unparalleled in cruelty anywhere in the world.
The commission was organized by the United Nations Human Rights Council last March in an effort to investigate the grave accusation brought forward by former North Korean citizens who since managed to get political asylum.
Among people questioned were former political dissidents, labor camp prisoners and even guards. The commission acknowledged that it is difficult to prosecute these crimes however; its members said that the report is a reminder and a call to action for the United Nations. Their hope is to galvanize enough support and create enough international pressure to stop the actions of the North Korean regime.
