LastPass Head Says Majority Of Users Unaffected By Attack

Hackers were able to breach the system of LastPass recently, according to the password managing company. Even as the email addresses along with other information of users were accessed, the company said the intruders were unable to access the accounts storing the passwords of users.

Chief executive Joe Siegrist said the company is confident that majority of its users had suitable protection from the hack. It is possible for users to be uncomfortable with the fact that a company securing numerous passwords was hacked, while others may consider it as part of the life on the internet. LastPass is not the only security company to have been targeted by hackers since a recent announcement by Kaspersky Lab revealed that the security company was also hacked.

In addition, the password managing company also discovered indications of security breaches in the past. The company also advised users in 2011 to change weak master passwords along with their online banking passwords.

Suspicious activity was discovered and blocked by the company on Friday. Erin Styles, vice president for marketing of the company, revealed that it is looking into the timeline of the breach. Usernames and passwords are not stored by the company on its servers, which may become a target of hackers. Instead, LastPass uses encryption that hides the passwords of users. The passwords can only be read through the web browsers of the users.

However, the master passwords of users may be susceptible to hacks. In addition to the email addresses of users, the clues for the master passwords of users were also stolen. Users with simple clues for their master passwords may have to deal with some issues in the future. These issues include someone accessing their accounts, which may leave their usernames and passwords out in the open.

Siegrist said users with weak master passwords should change their passwords immediately as well as passwords used on other websites.
