Lennon monument unveiled in Liverpool

A new monument in Liverpool was unveiled on Saturday by the son and first wife of Beatles late singer John Lennon to commemorate his 70th birthday.

The 18-foot monument for promoting peace cost $350,000 to make, and its unveiling was one of many activities held around the world for Lennon, one of music history’s greatest influences.

Lennon was shot and killed in New York in 1980 when he was 40 years old.

Online search giant Google changed its logo for the day with a drawing and video based on the singer’s famous song “Imagine.”

A benefit concert was held in Manhattan and Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono and son Sean played in Reykjavik.

Lennon’s first wife Cynthia and their son Julian, attended a choir performance in Chavasse Park in Liverpool as part of the unveiling.

“I think the mourning is over for John,” said Cynthia, who was married to Lennon between 1962 and 1968. “I think it’s time to celebrate, which is what we’re doing.”

“I think most things have been said,” their son Julian said. “We come here with our hearts to honor dad and to pray for peace and say thank you to each and every one of you and everyone involved in the celebrations tonight.”

Lennon wrote many of the Beatles’ hits like “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You”, and “A Hard Day’s Night.”

After the band broke up in 1970, Lennon started a solo career with songs like “Imagine.”

Yoko Ono has worked on a digitally remastered album of Lennon songs released by the music label EMI.
