Man Dies in 2011 NYC Triathlon, Another woman in Critical Condition
New York — A 64 year old man died while competing in the 2011 Nautica New York Triathlon Sunday while another woman was critical after both had trouble in the first part of the triathlon: swimming. Triathlon involves three parts: 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 6 mile run.
The only casualty of the highly publicized New York City Triathlon was recognized in the name of Michael Kudryk from Freehold, New Jersey. Kudryk was rescued unconscious from the Hudson River at around 7:45am while the race is ongoing but unfortunately he died immediately before reaching the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The 40 year old woman who was critical during the swim part of the race was taken to the same hospital, St. Luke’s, but was under observation in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. The woman was immediately known to be from Elmhurst, Illinois but the woman’s name was still unidentified as of the moment. 26 other participants of the triathlon race were also pulled out of the Hudson River while the race was on-going due to minor injuries.
Hudson River was contaminated by a sewage spill last month but police invalidated the theory linking the sewage spill and the race casualty and the injuries. Before the river was used for the triathlon race, it was closed temporarily for the public use to undergo clean-up phase.
In the same race of the NYC Triathlon 3 years ago, an Argentine participant died after being rescued unconscious in Hudson River. The Sunday event was the 11th edition of the New York City Triathlon. The 2011 event attracted participants from 26 countries and 43 states. The director of the race said that the triathlon participants this year exceeded 3,000 participants. Due to overwhelming popularity of the race, the 2011 event’s registration was already full immediately after 6 minutes way back in 2009.
