Mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods urged in U.S.
Organic foods producers and supporters petitioned Tuesday the U.S. government for the mandatory labeling of all genetically engineered foods produced in the market nowadays. The same group had encouraged all consumers to join their cause and try to go online. A total of 21 petitioners have pleaded the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States to use its sovereign powers to ensure that a law will be enacted helping consumers know that the foods they’re buying are genetically produced or with some ingredients that are genetically modified.
The 25 page petition has urged the U.S. government to immediate act on this one because absence of mandatory labeling has become very misleading to consumers. This is one way to prevent and eliminate economic fraud and protect consumers from being deceived of what they thought are not genetically modified foods as there is no indication in the label. The group has launched a website where people can flood the FDA with their own views and voice out their support for the campaign.
Currently, mandatory labeling of genetically modified and engineered foods are required in 15 European Union countries, also in Japan, China, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, and many other nations across the globe. The aim of the group is to reach the White House by October 16 through their unified petition.
