“Monsters University” Tops Weekend Box Office
Studio estimates showed that “Monsters University” beat “World War Z” and “Man of Steel” at the weekend box office. The movie debuted with $82 million at the box office over the weekend. John Goodman and Billy Crystal will return as the voices of the characters that originally came out in the 2001 hit movie, “Monsters Inc,”
According to the head of distribution of Disney, Dave Hollis, the diverse offerings made it an extraordinary weekend for the industry.
“Monsters University” became the 14th consecutive Pixar movie to debut in first place. Hollis added that expectations for excellence compel filmmakers to deliver quality films consistently. He also indicated that the movie surpassed expectations of the studio.
In second place was “World War Z” of Paramount at $66 million. The movie, which stars Brad Pitt, went through a number of rewrites as well as reshoots that increased its budget to over $200 million. Despite the delay in its release due to changes to its ending, initial reviews of the movie were positive.
A franchise may be eyed for the movie following its initial success at the box office.
The movie was the biggest opening for a live-action movie ever since “Avatar.” It is also the biggest opening of Brad Pitt and the biggest for Paramount in recent years. “Man of Steel” of Warner Bros. was at third place as it added $41.2 million to its ticket sales in the domestic market, bringing its total to more than $210 in two weeks.
Fourth place went to “This Is The End” of Sony, which stars James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill.
“Now You See Me” placed fifth as it entered its fourth week on the big screen. Although “Monsters University” topped domestic ticket sales over the weekend, the “Man Of Steel” took the top spot in international ticket sales as indicated by Rentrak.
“Man Of Steel” took in $89 million in international ticket sales while “Monsters University” raked in $54.5 million.
