More Americans Under Poverty line
More Americans in Poverty. Washington - 1 out of 6 Americans or roughly 46.2 million are now living within the poverty line. Many Americans are heavily affected by the economic recession causing millions to lose their jobs and then struggling to find a new one. Another concern is the growing number of Americans without health insurance. Currently, they are numbered at around 49.9 million, the biggest and worst figure in two decades.
The figures are included in the Census report released Tuesday. The Census gives an overview of the economic situation of all American last year when the unemployment rate soared to one of the highest at 9%. The poverty rate in the United States has climbed to 15.1% from last year's 14.3%.
The economic well-being of each American has gone worse in totality for the years 2007 up to 2010 compared to the same period in the early 80s when the country faced an energy crisis and high inflation, interest and unemployment rates due to government cutbacks. In 2010, the annual income for a family of 4 within the poverty level was $22,314. The Census began since 1959 where the poverty rate among Americans is measured annually. This year's 15.1% overall poverty rate was the highest since 1983 and tied the 1993 poverty rate
