Negotiator Says An Extension Of Iran Nuclear Deal Unacceptable
Iran is not inclined to accept any extension of the sanctions beyond the ten years indicated on the Iran nuclear deal. This was revealed by a senior nuclear negotiator of the Islamic Republic recently. Abbas Araqchi said attempts in re-imposing sanctions after the decade-long period expires can be considered a breach of the agreement reached between Iran and the six world powers.
Araqchi referred to the UN Security Council resolution that endorsed the deal in limiting the nuclear program of Iran in exchange for a reduction in sanctions. The nuclear program of Iran was considered by the world powers as a way of acquiring a nuclear bomb. But, Iran consistently indicated it was for peaceful purposes.
The UN Security Council resolution allows a re-imposition of the sanctions if the deal is violated by Iran within the next decade. On the other hand, if all the provisions of the deal are followed by Iran, the terms and measures on the resolution will end.
But, the six world powers and the European Union informed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that they are planning to request a five-year extension of the resolution after ten years have passed, which allows the re-imposition of the sanctions. Araqchi said the resolution is clear with the 10-year timeframe of the agreement, and the case of Iran with the Security Council will be closed after ten years has passed.
Araqchi added that if any one of the world powers will request an extension of the terms after ten years, it will be a breach of the Iran nuclear deal that was finalized in Vienna recently.
