Nelson Mandela’s Condition Is Improving

In a recent statement, representatives and family of the former anti-apartheid leader and South African president Nelson Mandela said that his condition is improving after being admitted to the hospital Wednesday around midnight.

This is the second trip the former president has taken to the hospital in quite a short time, spending some 18 days last December to treat a lung infection and gallstones.

The hospital in which the former head of state was admitted wasn’t made public. In an update, President Jacob Zuma’s representatives thanked the press for the co-operation and for respecting Nelson Mandela’s privacy.

A spokesman for the President’s office also added that doctors are attending to Mr. Mandela continuously, and that they acted in a preventive manner, judging that due to his advanced age and health history a hospital admission would be the best measure when signs of the lung infection reappeared.

The president also urged South African’s to pray for their former leader, who is considered by most the spiritual founder of the country and the the main actor in ending the oppressive apartheid regime.

Nelson Mandela first contracted tuberculosis in the 1980’s while he was imprisoned, in the meantime his lung condition seems to have worsened as this is his fourth hospital admittance in the last two years.
