New Instagram Feature Allow Users To Switch Between Separate Accounts

A new feature was released by Instagram recently that allowed users with multiple accounts to easily switch from one account to another. Users were given the ability to add as well as switch between five separate accounts. TechCrunch said the new feature was tested for iOS users was tested by the company last Week while the feature for Android users was tested by the company in November.

The “Add Account” option is available for users who updated the app to version 7.15. Prior to the update, users were unable to store different Instagram account logins simultaneously. Whenever they wanted to switch accounts, it was necessary to log out of the account currently used before logging back into a different account. While Instagram want users to maintain a single account, the prevalence of the photo-sharing app resulted to an increase in the need to maintain multiple accounts. Users who have a personal account felt the need to create a new account for a small business or they may have been given the task of maintaining the profile of their brand or company.

TechCrunch indicates that this feature may have been created by the company based on how the app was being used by younger people. The New York Times said younger people have the tendency to compartmentalize their presence in social media through a number of different accounts. One account is a fake private account where they may share some unflattering pictures. The second account may be their real public account considered as an official adult profile in case their parents, employers or teachers want to look them up. Offering the new feature may allow Instagram to increase engagement among users as well as increase ad revenue.
