New Nutrition Labels Could Make Healthy Choice Easier

The Food and Drug Administration has recently proposed a set of changes for nutritional labels on packaged food and beverages that can completely change the way consumers choose what to buy. Once approved, the new labels should show, in a much clearer light, details like the total amount of calories, added sugar amounts and other nutrients like Vitamin D and potassium.

The same set of changes intends to address the issue of size requirements to more accurately portray the appropriate daily consumption limits. The modifications would require each soda bottle to contain enough liquid for only one serving not just to mention the appropriate daily intake. The change intends to make calorie counting easier for consumers.

This is the first change of the nutrition label standards since the FDA made them mandatory for all packaged foods and beverages more than two decades ago. It comes as a necessity now that consumers are better informed and know what to look for on a nutritional label.

First Lady Michelle Obama, a major supporter of the change said that a consumers should be able to know if a product they intend to buy is good for their family just by looking at the label. Among many changes, a very important one would be the exact specification of added sugar vs naturally occurring sugar found in each product.
