North Korea Supposedly Arrests South Korean Spy

North Korea released a statement last week in which it stated that a South Korean spy was arrested and is being investigated on charges of espionage. While both countries have had a number of spies infiltrated in various government and private establishments since the end of the war back in 1954, the cases of spies actually being arrested have been few.

The KCNA said that the spy was disguised as a “religionist” and was engaged in anti-DPRK espionage for the past six years in a “third country” that shares a border with North Korea.

The KCNA didn’t release any extra information and did not explain what it meant by “religionist” nor the name of the spy or the third country in which he had engaged in anti-DPRK activities.

North Korean officials added that the alleged spy entered North Korea with the clear intent of rally “dishonest element” and use them to undermine the stability of the country social system.

South Korean officials dismissed the report deeming it “groundless” adding that they have no further comment on the matter.

Tension between the two countries has seen a constant rise in 2013 despite several attempts at dialogue with both North Korea and South Korea doubting each other’s engagement and desire for peace.
