Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 Available Through Company Website

Gamers may soon enjoy using the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 as it is set to be delivered by July. The image of Oculus on virtual reality gaming has started to gain traction as the second Rift Developer’s kit or the DK2 has become available for developers.

The headset can be purchased by game developers through the website of Oculus. The developer’s kit has a price tag of $350, and is expected to be delivered by July.

A number of the features of the headset are available for average gamers, according to Oculus. These features include major technical developments like a high-definition display and low-latency, accurate positional head tracking system.

The Crystal Cove prototype of Oculus became the basis of the DK2. Among the features that were adapted for the DK2 is the enhancement of the potential presence and the low-persistence OLED screen display that reduces simulator sickness. The device also features a high-definition display for each eye that offers a resolution of 1080 by 960. This enhanced resolution enhances color, contrast and clarity.

The enhanced low-latency positional head tracking system of the external camera offers the opportunity for players to lean into to check virtual objects closely. It will also allow players to look around corners.

Orientation tracking was also enhanced on the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2. It also features an integrated latency testing feature, enhanced optics, a USB port on the headset, restored Software development Kit, and was optimized to incorporate the Oculus Rift into the Unreal and Unity Engine 4 game engines. The control box was also removed by the company.

Even with the enhancements, there is still a lack of an overall experience and unavailable to gamers. Although the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 is not yet a Holodeck, it is a significant step into the appropriate direction.
