Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius Faces Murder Charges
Double amputee Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is set to face murder charges after he supposedly fatally shot his girlfriend.
The entire nation was shocked by the alleged killing since he is considered a national hero after he overcame the challenge of having no fibula at birth. He underwent a double amputation below the knee and became the first Paralympian to compete in the Summer Olympics last year.
The reported murder involving Oscar Pistorius was on the front page of a number of newspapers. It overshadowed the State of the Nation address of the president, Jacob Zuma.
No cameras were allowed in the courtroom where the athlete was formally charged. Police officials indicated that they will contest any application for bail. The athlete covered his face when he arrived at the courtroom for the hearing.
The girlfriend of Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp, was already dead when police arrived at the house of the athlete. Oscar Pistorius is also known as the Blade Runner since he uses carbon-fiber blades in competitions.
Reports revealed that the athlete mistook his girlfriend, a model who was going to appear at a reality TV show, for a trespasser. However, the police were supposedly surprised by the report since there were supposedly complaints of domestic episodes at the home of the athlete.
Pistorius won a pair of gold medals at the London Paralympic Games last September. He also added a silver medal in the same games. The athlete also competed in the 400-meter and 4x400-meter relay at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
Although he lost the 100-meter and the 200-meter titles at the Paralympics, Pistorius was able to defend his 400-meter race title. Oscar Pistorius was also part of the 4x100-meter team that won the gold.
