Oscar Nominees Cover the Last Century

Nominations for possible Academy Awards winners cover the entire last century.  Movies from World War I namely "War Horse" through movies recently like the family drama "The Descendants" are included in the list.

Also included in the nominations are such movies as the 1920s and '30s films entitled "The Artist" and "Hugo," the 1950s movie "My Week with Marilyn," the 1960s "The Help," the 1970s thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and the Margaret Thatcher chronicle "The Iron Lady.”

Possible best picture on Oscar night could be "The Descendants," which stars George Clooney acting as a Hawaiian father struggling to keep his family together after his wife had a boating accident which places her in a coma; and the best musical winner could be "The Artist," with Jean Dujardin.

George Clooney and Jean Dujardin are the possible nominees for the best actor category at the Oscars.

Another celebrated performer who would possibly win the Oscar is the best dramatic actress Meryl Streep who played Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."  Streep won Oscars twice and is the most nominated actress with a total of 17 nominations, five times more than Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson who got the second place.

Also possible nominees are Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer who played Mississippi maids in "The Help"; Michelle Williams who portrayed Marilyn Monroe and Kenneth Branagh who played as Laurence Olivier in "My Week with Marilyn"; Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar"; Glenn Close as a woman posing as a male butler in "Albert Nobbs"; Brad Pitt as Oakland A's manager Billy Beane in "Moneyball"; and Michael Fassbender as a sex maniac in "Shame."

For the best picture contest, the blockbuster movies such as the "Titanic" or "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" would be the eventual best contenders.

The winners of the 84th annual Oscar Awards will be announced on Feb. 26, this year, in a program aired live on ABC from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.  This will be highlighted with Billy Crystal returning as the Oscars host after eight years of avoiding the limelight.
