Pakistan Hangs Two Militants
Two militants were hanged in Pakistan this week as executions for those on death row were resumed after a moratorium. The new approach to the death penalty and the way it is carried out is mainly due to the Peshawar school massacre which shocked the world.
The two executed militants were Aqeel Ahmad also known as Dr. Usman and Arshad Mehmood. Ahmad, who was previously a member of the Army Medical Corps was sentenced for his involvement in the attack on the Army GHQ and the Sri Lankan cricket team. Mehmood, was sentenced to death for the 2003 attack on General Pervez Musharraf’s motorcade.
According to official government representatives the executions will continue with 10 more being scheduled for the next couple of days. Six of them will take place in the Punjab province while the remaining four will take place in the southern Sindh province.
Shahid Hussain, the superintendent of one of the largest prisons in the Sindh region said that death warrants were also issued for two prisoners, both members of the sectarian militant organization Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
The United Nations has requested that Pakistan reanalyze their approach towards the way the death penalty is dealt out to terrorism detainees adding that data shows it to have no deterrent effect on the phenomenon.
