Pakistan Hit By Massive 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake
The southwest part of Pakistan was the scene of a massive 7.7 earthquake that killed up to 46 people and damaged countless homes. The earthquake who had its center somewhere in Baluchistan province’s Awaran was felt for miles around reaching New Delhi and even Dubai. The epicenter of the earthquake was almost 20 km underground.
Official data says that the earthquake struck at 16:29 and leveled scores of homes, creating millions of dollars’ worth of damage and killing at least 46 people.
Even if the quake hit an area that is very sparsely populated with mostly mud built buildings, officials estimate heavy casualties. Asad Gilani, an official from the Baluchistan administration confirmed the 46 deaths and said that at least 100 more were injured. He said that a considerable number of houses have collapsed in the entire area, a detail that can add to the current death toll.
Provincial government issued an emergency state, deploying medical teams as well as 200 soldiers and paramilitary troops to help with relief efforts. The Baluchistan province is the biggest yet least populated region in Pakistan. It is very reach in oil and other resources, yet highly unstable both climatically and when it comes to local security, being one of the most violent areas in the country.
