Pakistani PM Raja Perez Ashraf May Be Arrested

An order to arrest the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Raja Perez Ashraf, was given by Pakistan’s Supreme Court this week on charges of corruption.

Pakistan’s Supreme judges have issued out an order for the arrest of no less than 16 people one of which is Prime Minister Raja Perez Ashraf. The suspects are expected to be presented before the court tomorrow to face their charges.

One of Raja Perez Ashraf’s party leaders, Aitzaz Ahsan, said in a press conference that “Mr. Ashraf will remain prime minister till a vote of confidence is lodged against him”. Aitzaz Ahsan also added that “there will be a political turmoil in the country as a result of this decision.”

During his run as Water and Power Minister, Raja Perez Ashraf supposedly accepted bribes and a percentage of revenue from power plant companiesin exchange for contracts for work on various power production methods.

The contracts didn't pan out to well, with some contractors not being able to produce results while others managed to complete their jobs with great delay.

This added to Pakistan’s severe power crisis and earned the PM his nickname “Raja Rental”. As of March 2012 the contracts that were signed under Raja Perez Ashraf were declared null and void and an investigation was started that culminated with this week’s arrest orders.
