Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Hits Theaters

The people behind the Paranormal Activity series are trying to shake things up and get whole new segments interested in their horror flicks. The fifth part called “The Marked Ones” steps away from the usual white suburbia setting and gives a more divers, Latino based community in an effort to attract new viewers.

If the movie succeeds simply by adding a diverse cast or if the once new idea of “found-footage” has been overdone will be revealed in the box office reception “The Marked Ones” gets.

The story’s main protagonist is Hector (Jorge Diaz), a teenager who seems to be in love with his video camera, taking it everywhere he goes. Along with his two friends Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh) investigate a series of weird noises coming from a neighbor’s apartment. This lead them into a world of witchcraft and horror.

While the movie can be described in many way, few of them having anything to do with originality, the one saving grace of this movie as well as most of its predecessors is the impressive special effects.

A cameo by the ever-present Katie Featherston and some memorable scenes involving a floating dog made this movie somewhat entertaining; however, there is a sense of wear and tear in the entire series that along with the weak story-line and the less than enthusiastic performance will probably make it the final entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
