Paris Hilton released from jail

Celebrity and hotel heiress Paris Hilton was released from jail early Saturday in Las Vegas after being arrested on Friday night for cocaine possession, Las Vegas police said.

Hilton was on a black Cadillac Escalade which was pulled over by police in front of the Wynn Hotel at about 11:30 p.m. after law enforcement officers detected the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

“Officers noticed a vehicle leaving smoke trail of a controlled substance and made a stop based on that,” police spokesman Marcus Martin said.

Martin also confirmed that Hilton was found in possession of cocaine but said he did not know the amount found.

Cy Waits, the driver of the SUV who is also said to be the boyfriend of Hilton, was arrested for driving under the influence. Waits also owns nightclubs in the Las Vegas area.

Hilton was then detained at the Clark County jail, then released after police determined that she was not a flight risk, Lt. Wayne Holman says.

David Chesnoff, attorney for Hilton released a statement saying, “This matter will be dealt with in the courts, not in the media, and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law.”

Hilton was also detained briefly on July 2 by South African police last month for reportedly using marijuana during the World Cup. The case was later dropped with her publicist calling the incident “a complete misunderstanding.”

Hours after her release, the socialite Hilton posted a message on Twitter that said, “Going to bed. Sweet dreams everyone.”
