Pau Gasol – Andrew Bynum Trade Put On Hold

It appears that the trade involving Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol has yet to progress as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers have yet to find something in common. Sources indicated that discussions may continue as no resolution was reached during initial talks on Sunday.

Although the two teams wanted to find a common ground over the weekend, talks have yet to progress. Cleveland wanted to ensure that physicals of new players are completed prior to the deadline for the contract of Bynum to be guaranteed passes.

The main issue on the trade discussions remained the same even as the two sides have considered different possibilities in the discussions. Los Angeles is looking for other benefits aside from the savings the team will get when they get Andrew Bynum for Pau Gasol and waiving him. The team is looking at getting a draft pick or a young player. Los Angeles may save over $20 million if they trade for and cut Bynum. On the other hand, Cleveland is hesitant in meeting the price since the Spanish player will become a free agent once the season ends.

Cleveland is also taking into consideration trading Bynum for Richard Jefferson of the Utah Jazz instead of Pau Gasol.

The Cavaliers have won only one of the last nine games and is currently in twelfth spot in the Eastern Conference. The contract of Bynum, which is worth $12.3 million, will become fully guaranteed by Tuesday and Cleveland is assessing its options following it current slump in the standings.

However, if no deal is made by the deadline, Cleveland can save $6 million if they waive Andrew Bynum by Tuesday. The team may also decide to keep the player in their roster and wait for a good deal that may come their way before the trade deadline in the coming month. For the moment, Andrew Bynum continues to be a Cavalier while Pau Gasol remains a Laker.
