Phelps Victorious in the 200 m Butterfly at FINA Worlds

Shanghai, China — American swimming sensation, Michael Phelps delivered the goods by capturing the elusive gold medal in the 200 meters butterfly event to add to his increasing collection. Phelps defeated Japanese Takeshi Matsuda who led the race going to the final lap. Wu Peng, the Chinese swimmer, settled for the bronze medal.

Earlier this year in the first two swimming events at the FINA World Championships, Wu Peng denied Phelps of two gold medals in the same 200 meter butterfly event. Phelps already won 14 Olympic swimming gold medals and 23 world records at his belt.

The swimmer rose to fame when Athens, Greece hosted the 2004 Olympic Games. In 2001, he won his first record breaking feat in the world championships in a very unforgettable fashion.

For him, the win at the 2011 FINA is very memorable since it marks the 10th years anniversary of his very first title in the world championships way back ago in 2001. He was very young back then, 15 or 16, as he uttered. Although quite disappointed about his swim time below the world record, the believes he is improving tremendously and looks forward to the next Olympic Games in London.

His mother, sister and girlfriend were very ecstatic about his win. They were all present in the crowd to cheer him and all the members of the US National Swimming Team.
