Phil Mickelson Wins Open Champhionship Behind An Exceptional Last Round

A remarkable final round at Muirfield allowed Phil Mickelson to win the Open Championship. The win came around one month after his sixth runner-up finish at the US Open.

However, after claiming the Claret Jug, the American professional golfer said that he probably played the best round in his career during the tournament. A week before, Mickelson also claimed the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open trophy at Castle Stuart.

He said that resiliency is needed in the sport since losing plays a big part in the game. He added that it was a great day for him, and he will treasure it forever.

After winning the Open Championship, Mickelson said the win was extra special for him and his caddie, Jim “Bones” McKay. It was a major accomplishment for their team and the championship was the biggest challenge in his career. British-born Bones said that Mickelson was playing the best game in his career.

The wife of Phil Mickelson said that her husband told her that he will bring home the Claret Jug. He is the third straight Open winner aged at least forty years after Ernie Els and Darren Clarke won it in 2012 and 2011, respectively.

The Open Championship allowed Phil Mickelson to match the five Major wins of a number of golfing legends like Byron Nelson and Seve Ballesteros. The only missing piece for a career Grand Slam is the US Open.

He nearly blew his chance at the trophy when the ball went off the green at the 16th. However, he was still able to save a par on the par-three hole. He was the only play to finish the tournament under par, and he was ahead by three shots over second placer Henrik Stenson.

According to Butch Harmon, his coach, the win of Phil Mickelson was the best round of golf that he saw, topping the 1993 win of Greg Norman.
