Piracy Record Set By Season Finale Of The Game Of Thrones
The season finale of the Game of Thrones has broken the record for the number of illegal downloads. Over 1.5 million downloads were made in the first twelve hours, which may not bother HBO since it was described as the most pirated television show in 2012.
However, it is expected to annoy content owners who are disturbed by piracy. Figures compiled by TorrentFreak revealed that another six million downloads are expected over the next few days, which will make it bigger than the official viewing figure of the show, which stands at 7.1 million.
Numerous people have also simultaneously shared the file, which surpassed 250,000 at one point.
Most downloads were done in Australia, which normally tops these lists. The United States came in second followed by the UK while Canada came in fourth. The Game of Thrones is legally available in these countries, which run counter to claims that pirates are merely providing an alternative.
However, the high figure in streaming in Australia can be attributed to the Foxtel exclusive deal, which would require fans to pay $35 each month to access series 4. Earlier series were available through Google Play, Quickflix and iTunes at a reasonable price. Although the show can be access through Google Play at $29, a number of people were not quite patient.
The delay in the availability of shows was the main reason for downloading in Australia basing on a survey conducted last year. Some people who had Foxtel subscriptions also downloaded the show since it was aired four hours late.
In an effort to reduce piracy the Australian Home Entertainment Distributors; Association announced recently that movies will be available within 90 days after they are released, which is earlier than the present 120 days. However, if fans are not patient enough to wait, the announcement will amount to nothing as demonstrated by the season finale of the Game of Thrones.
