Police Beefs Up Mumbai Bombing Interrogations
On a statement by Mumbai officials last Thursday, they informed the public of how the Indian police sifted through forensic evidence and security camera footage, and interrogated members of a home-grown Islamist militant group for further proof to the worst bomb blasts in Mumbai since 2008. The bomb blasts last Wednesday evening, which killed 18 people were due to three near-simultaneous improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which were packed with ammonium nitrate.
Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said in an interview that, "There was no intelligence regarding a militant attack in Mumbai. That is not a failure of intelligence agencies. (We) know that perpetrators have attacked and have worked in a very, very clandestine manner.”
There is no evidence to pinpoint a certain group for the blasts and no one is claiming the responsibility for it as well, however it is believed to be a form of retaliation to a number of plots recently stopped by the police, including that of Indian Mujahideen, which is an Islamist militant group known from its city-to-city bombing campaigns using small explosive devices planted in restaurants, bus stops and on busy streets. They were also believed o have ties with Pakistani militant groups which were involved in certain bombing attacks to India, however, Pakistani leaders denied the allegations. India was also careful in dealing with the allegations, because Pakistani and Indian ties were still not on its best terms, since the major bombings. They were also looking at another angle, since the bombings are targeting busy areas and those that are highly commercial.
