Highlights
Lactic acid is the key agent used for developing Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), the biodegradable polymer. The remarkable feature of PLA is that it is biodegradable and undergoes further decomposition. Its degradation does not need enzymes and the hydrolysis is dependent upon temperature, the ratio of isomers contained, and the size of the article made from PLA. Biodegradation is a perfect solution to eradicate the growing levels of plastic waste periodically. PLA is a prospective replacement for conventional petroleum based plastics as corn, a renewable resource, is the leading source to synthesize PLA. PLA is derived from corn, maize, Potato, wheat, Sugar cane and Sugar beet which are renewable resources.
The main source of polyester is corn starch in the United States and in the rest part of the world sugar cane is used. Polylactic Acid is extensively produced commercially in Japan and United States. Growth in polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics market is driving demand for lactic acid in industrial applications. Demand for PLA is also expected to increase significantly due to enhanced production capacities thereby improving availability and cutting the price of resin. PLA demand in the United States is expected to increase for industrial applications such as fibers, containers and packaging while Western Europe is expected to significantly boost its PLA demand for packaging applications. High prices have restricted consumption of PLA in China. PLA prices, are however, expected to decrease in the next couple of years due to improvements in fermentation techniques and economies of scale.
