Pope Francis Calls Modern Capitalism “Tyranny”
In his first major work as head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis chose to attack modern day capitalism, calling it “a new tyranny”. In his work, Pope Francis also tried to convince world leaders to focus on ending poverty and stop the growing inequality between rich and poor.
The document is 84 pages long and is officially called an apostolic exhortation. In it, Pope Francis attacked the current day “idolatry of money” and asked of all politicians and leaders to provide their citizens with “dignified work, education and healthcare”.
He also urged rich people to share their wealth. He spoke of the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” saying that in the same way it is made to show the importance of human life, a “thou shalt not” is needed in an economy that excludes the poor and condemns them to an unequal treatment and sometimes death.
Francis also spoke about the renewal of the Church in an era of expanding secularism in the Western countries. He said that the process is irreversible and that he would prefer a less secure financially church that is “dirty” from being out in the streets, helping those that need its help.
Pope Francis also talked about better cooperation with other religions and quoted the late Pope John Paul II in the lessons they could learn from other religions and other Christian cults.
