President Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump Praise Each Other

President Vladimir Putin of Russia and US presidential candidate Donald Trump exchanged praises recently indicating they are looking forward to any improvement in the cold relations between the two major world powers.

Trump was described as an “absolute leader” in the presidential race by Putin. On the other hand, Trump said Russia and the United States can defeat terrorism as well as restore world peace when they work with each other.

The remarks of the billionaire businessman differed from the rhetoric of his rivals in the presidential race. Putin is frequently bashed by Republicans who have used his strained relationship with President Barack Obama as proof of the lack of strength in international issues on part of the administration.

Obama is also critical of Putin and urged sanctions on Russia after it annexed Crimea. The two countries have different views on the fight against the Islamic State in Syria. President Bashar Assad of Syria is supported by Putin while Putin is calling on Assad to step down.

President Vladimir Putin is considered “highly respected” by Donald Trump, who thinks his background in business and negotiating skills will help him in improving relations with Russia and other countries. Putin welcomed the desire of Trump in improving relations with Russia. Putin said Trump is flamboyant and very talented. He added that United States voters will have to judge Trump based on his merits. President Vladimir Putin also said Donald Trump “is an absolute leader” in the presidential race.

On the other hand, Donald Trump was honored by the statement of Putin saying it is an honor to be complimented by a “highly respected” man. He added that the US and Russia can work well in overcoming terrorism and restore world peace. Trump also said mutual respect can result to trade and many other benefits.

The response of Trump was different from the stand of Carly Fiorina, another Republican candidate. Fiorina said during the presidential debate that she would not speak to Putin if she will be elected in November 2016 unless a number of military changes are made.

Jeb Bush, one of the staunch rivals of Trump said the support offered by Putin for him shows he is like Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, who attempted to improve US relations with Russia. He called Trump “Hillary 2.0” through his Twitter account.

Josh Earnest, spokesman for the White House, said the comments of Putin appeared to be an endorsement for Trump. However, he declined to weigh in on whether US-Russian relations will change if Trump becomes the president. He said he did not spent much time thinking about the possible “consequences of a Trump presidency.”

He considers the handling of US-Russian relations by President Obama effective in terms of US interests while standing up for basic international standards violated by the activities of Russia along its border with Ukraine. He was referring to the support offered by President Vladimir Putin for Russian separatists along eastern Ukraine.
