Price Of Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ Reduced
The Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ is set the stage for the development of numerous mini-sized computers in the market today. While it may be outperformed by the supercharged, quad-core-laden Raspberry Pi 2, it is still considered as an innovation in technology. This is particularly true when consumers are looking for power rather than a reasonably-priced micro-PC.
However, the price of the Model B+ remained exactly the same since it was launched into the market. There was no change in its $35 price tag even after the launch of the Pi 2, until now.
Eben Upton, founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, announced on Thursday that the price of the Model B+ will be reduced to $25. The move allows it to be differentiated from the current version of the device. It will also increase its appeal in the market with the development of the $9 Chip PC, which is currently being crowd-funded.
Uptan said product optimization gave the foundation the opportunity to hit its target price of $35 for the Raspberry Pi 2. This also made it cheaper to produce the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+. Due to this, the foundation decided to reduce the price tag of the device to $25. He also said the original device is suitable for users who are simply looking for a device that offers a networking functionality along with numerous USB ports and not the memory and performance offered by the Raspberry Pi 2.
The price tag of the Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+, which does not offer Ethernet connectivity and has a smaller number of USB ports, will still remain at $20.
He added that the first generation Raspberry Pi can be used as a cheap networked media streaming device once OpenElec is installed into it. However, for users are aiming to install GPIO pins into the device and want to be creative in producing Raspberry Pi projects, the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ may be the most suitable device for them.
