Protesters In Turkey Blame Government For Restricting Freedom
After a couple of tumultuous nights in the country’s biggest city, Istambul, the protests that started as a peaceful manifestation to stop the destruction of a park, have escalated into a country wide revolt that recently involved public workers along other protesters in Turkey.
Most of the complaints are addressed to current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and accuse him of promoting pro-Islamic changes in the constitution and promoting censorship and bans on alcohol.
Most protesters are young men who say that the main reason behind their protest is that their freedom is threatened by an Islamic government.
Police brutality seems to be a shocking reality in Turkey’s biggest cities as the way that protests are being dealt with seems to go on the verge of abuse.
However, this isn’t the reality in the whole of Turkey as the country’s more rural and conservative areas support Erdogan and give him credit for the country’s economic growth and stability since he took office in 2003.
Even with recent growth, young protesters in Turkey say that their futures are bleak as long as religiously motivated decisions like censoring the media and promoting religious education in place of a classical scientific approach are approved and secular principles are a secondary priority.
