Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates Her 90th Birthday
Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to reach the age of 90 as she celebrated her birthday on Thursday. Thousands of people turned out to offer their good wishes to the queen, including British astronaut Time Peake who is stationed at the International Space Station.
Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, her husband, were greeted by crowds of well-wishers along a roundabout in Windsor. The two have been together for 69 years.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery passed the Buckingham Palace before they staged a gun salute at noon as the Westminster Abbey rang its bells in tribute to the queen.
Tourists flocked outside the palace even though the longest-serving monarch of Britain was in Windsor. The members of the royal family joined the queen for a private celebration in the evening. Delhey Beatekrieger passed by the Buckingham Palace for the first time amid the celebration. Beatekrieger is a fan of the queen and wished her more happy years on her birthday.
Queen Elizabeth II has two birthday celebrations, the first one on the actual date of her birth on April 21 while the second one is in June, which is celebrated through the Trooping the Color parade. A four-day musical event will be held next month at the Windsor Castle will be among the celebrations for this year as well as a party at the Mall close to the Buckingham Palace in June.
The historic day was marked by a speech by Prime Minister David Cameron in the parliament of the United Kingdom. The parliament was lit up with the red, white and blue colors of the Union Jack for the event. Cameron said Britain is currently living in the “modern Elizabethan Era.”
When the queen was 21 years old, she dedicated her life to the service of her subjects. She represented the kingdom on 266 official visits in over a hundred countries around the world. Cameron said Queen Elizabeth II was able to fulfill her promise and people who meet her treasure their meeting for the rest of their lives. He added that the queen has a genuine interest in everyone she meets and cares about them.
