Randy Quaid and wife seek asylum in Canada
American actor Randy Quaid and his wife have applied for asylum with the immigration board of Canada, telling its members that “the murderers of Hollywood” are out to get them.
Their application to be accepted as refugees comes after warrants were issued in the U.S. for their arrest on charges of vandalizing their former property.
Police arrested the couple in Vancouver late Thursday on the warrants issued by a U.S. court.
Quaid and his wife did not attend a court hearing on the felony charges scheduled on Monday in Santa Barbara.
They were taken out of custody on Friday but must post a $9,750 bail each and pledge to attend the next hearing on Thursday.
Lee Carter, the Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney, announced on Friday that the couple’s bail have been increased to $500,000 each.
The Quaids’ counsel Robert Sanger said that he is optimistic that the problem may be solved soon but refused to give further details.
Evi Quaid requested a Canadian immigration officer not to order them to go back south of the border, claiming that actors Heath Ledger and David Carradine have been “murdered” under suspicious conditions and that she is anxious that her husband might be the next victim.
“We feel our lives are in danger,” she said. “Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners…We feel that we’re next.”
Randy Quaid, the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid, has starred in movies such as “Independence Day” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation.”
